What transfers with a door and what does not
A door sold as a shell is the outer skin and frame, nothing else. A complete door usually includes glass, the regulator and motor, the latch, and the interior trim panel. The gap between those two is several hundred dollars of hardware, so get the yard to say which one you are buying. Parts that often do not transfer:
- Mirror — often sold separately, especially heated or blind-spot-monitor units.
- Wiring harness — pinouts change across trim levels and model years. A base-model harness will not run a loaded car's features.

- Side-impact airbag sensor — mounted in the door or on the B-pillar on many mid-2000s and newer platforms.

Airbag and SRS warning
If the door or the pillar it bolts to carries a side-impact airbag or a crash sensor, treat the system as live. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 15 minutes minimum before unplugging any connector there. Never probe a yellow SRS connector with a test light or meter. Store any undeployed module face up, never face down on a solid surface. - Hood and trunk underside frames. Water pools in the stamped channels. Tap along them; a dull thud instead of a ring means rot or old filler.
- Drains. Blocked drains at the bottom of a door are why that door rusted. Check they are open.
A magnet is the cheapest tool you can carry. It sticks to steel and slides off filler, so run it over anything suspiciously smooth.
Getting the panel off and home
A front door weighs 60 to 90 pounds and goes unbalanced the instant the second hinge bolt breaks loose. Bring a second person; yard staff will not hold it.
- Support first. Slide a milk crate or padded block under the door, take the weight off the hinges, then start on the bolts.
- Mark the hinge positions. Paint-pen around each hinge plate before removal so you can transfer the alignment instead of guessing at gaps.
- Unplug at the jamb. Pop the rubber boot at the A-pillar and separate the connector there. Cutting wires costs you the pigtail you need.
- Release the check strap. Pull the strap pin before the hinge bolts or the door will swing on you.
