Understanding VIN Character Mapping

The modern standardized vehicle identifier layout was established by the NHTSA in 1981 to enforce a reliable identification mechanism. Letters like I, O, and Q are never used in valid VINs to prevent clerical errors resembling numbers 1 and 0.

Index 9: Security Check Digit

A mathematical checksum character generated from all other values to immediately flag fake or forged VIN tags.

Index 10: Model Year Code

Specifies the calendar model year of production, utilizing alphabet indexes from A to Y (excluding letters I, O, Q, U, Z).
